Jackie Carr, RN, MSN, NP-BC, LE, is a nurse trainer for Allergan Pharmaceuticals in the use of BOTOX Cosmetic and Dr. Holds is a physician trainer for Allergan, as well. Jackie has provided BOTOX injections to patients for over 12 years and has one of the busiest cosmetic BOTOX practices in Missouri. Dr. Holds has used BOTOX since 1987 (when it was known as Oculinum) to treat cosmetic and medical conditions, conducted basic research on the effects of BOTOX on humans, and has taught the procedures to hundreds of other doctors.
BOTOX is a neuromodulator, a drug that relaxes targeted facial muscles. BOTOX injections are a simple way to look younger fast without surgery. These non-invasive injections soften wrinkles that are caused by muscle contraction as a result of repeating the same facial expression.
The results of BOTOX injections may be dramatic or subtle, and our sensible approach ensures that your ability to make normal facial expressions will not be affected.
BOTOX is made up of a protein naturally-occurring purified protein. It has been used safely for more than 25 years to correct muscle spasms, including twitches of the eyelids and eyebrows. While BOTOX is a type of Botulinum A toxin, the dose used in the injections is extremely low.
The injections temporarily (3-6 months) selectively weaken the muscles responsible for wrinkle-causing muscle contractions. The wrinkle is then softened and smoothed. In some patients a “training” or “facial reshaping” effect is observed in which muscle contractions are lessened long after the Botox has worn off.
A topical anesthetic can be used to numb the areas where you will receive injections. The needle is very fine, and the discomfort is quick and minimal.
Most people report that they experience little to no pain from BOTOX injections. If you find that the procedure is uncomfortable for you, however, we can apply ice or a cooling blower to diminish your discomfort.
Depending on the number of areas to be treated, your BOTOX procedure will take about 15 minutes. Please allow 30-45 minutes for your office visit.
The effects of BOTOX last for 3-6 months, and you will continue to see results in 24-48 hours, but effects gradually appear for 14 days.
You can resume all normal activities immediately after your BOTOX injections. Avoid make-up for 6 hours after your appointment.
Some people experience no discomfort at all after their BOTOX injections, but others may have some slight tenderness and bruising where the injections were made.
You will be asked not to massage the injection areas for a couple of days, and you should avoid lying down for the first few hours after your treatment. This will prevent swelling. No massage or facials should be undergone for a week, and you may wish to refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours.
Please do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, or blood thinners for at least a week before BOTOX injections. Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medically prescribed medications.
Sometimes, in order to achieve the results you desire, BOTOX injections are best combined with one or more other injectables, such as the dermal fillers, Restylane, Juvederm, Voluma, Belotero, Radiesse, and Sculptra.
Please avoid the following for 7-10 days before your appointment:
