Sculptra use in the U.S. began as a treatment for people with HIV who experienced facial fat loss, a condition called lipoatrophy that causes a hollowing of areas of the face. Today, Sculptra is primarily used as an anti-aging dermal filler to improve lines, wrinkles, and folds, as well as:

  • Chin indentations or wrinkles
  • Hollowed cheeks or temples
  • Sagging jowls
  • Facial volume loss

Sculptra is a synthetic injectable that consists of poly L-lactic acid.  It is biocompatible and well-tolerated without the need for an allergy test. Biocompatibility means that your body recognizes it as a natural rather than foreign substance.  Full facial augmentation can be performed to reverse age-related volume loss.

How Sculptra Works

Injected into a deep layer of the skin, Sculptra stimulates your body’s natural collagen production and increases the thickness of your skin and deeper tissues as it adds volume that has been lost during the aging process. In this way, it restores the fullness of youth by actually building a stronger tissue that fills and supports any hollowed or gaunt areas of the face.

As more collagen is produced by your body, you will see a gradual improvement for a period of months after your treatment. This makes the onset of effect less obvious to others around you. They will simply say that you look better and more youthful.

Your Sculptra Treatment

Like the other dermal fillers,  Sculptra’s injections include Lidocaine for comfort in the treated areas, and we include a topical anesthetic as well.  The injections require only about a half hour to complete.  Please allow an hour for your session.

In order to achieve optimal results, most people require at least three treatments 45 days apart.  The effects can last as long as two years, however, the number of vials and treatment sessions required varies on volume loss and age.  As a rule of thumb, one vial of Sculptra Aesthetic will be needed for each decade of age to achieve a full correction across the entire face.   Many patients choose to have touch up treatments yearly.

Recovery from Sculptra is almost immediate. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and invisible lumps in the injection areas for a week or two. Some people also experience some redness, bleeding, and itching.

An ice pack can be used to ease the discomfort, and you will be instructed how to massage the treated areas during the healing period.

Please do not take aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications, or blood thinners for at least a week before your injections.  Please consult with your primary physician prior to discontinuing any medically prescribed medications.
